Animated men draped over tiny espresso cups, noisy children skipped rope, effortlessly stunning women glided with baguettes—my eyes traveled the many layers of everyday life. And there was more on which to feast. I was tugged back several steps thanks to catching an arresting visual from the corner of my eye. Was it a vintage shop, an artist’s atelier…what could it be? Whatever it was, it spoke of mystery and marvel.

As curiosity would have it, it encouraged me to press my nose against the towering window, to figure it out! And it paid off. I stood drooling over this dimly lit setting that housed chandeliers, frames, and what appeared to be pottery. I looked closer and saw an astounding number of pieces. They seemed to sing in chorus: “This is a special place, please come in, please come in.” How can one refuse such an invitation?

My heart beat faster at the thought of entering this space. And then it sank just as quickly—the store had closed for the day. Fortunately, when beautiful creations seduce a woman, her itinerary naturally prioritizes a trek back to the shop. Upon my return the next day, I could not have been more pleased with my decision. I was swathed in understated luxury—weathered cabinets, washed wallpaper, and milky glazed ceramics!

I moved through the store, in slow motion, touching these unexpectedly light pieces. They revealed how artistically nature had been captured in its true form through natural materials. It is through rich experiences that one can appreciate the journey of the many gifted minds and hands through which the pottery passes—from the initial slab to final presentation—to reach our hands and hearts. The studied imperfections, hints of gray and subtle introductions of colour spoke of the creators and craftsmen. They served as a testament to their observation, imagination, and dedication to create timeless luxury.

It is no wonder then that the richness of this curated space didn’t intimidate me; it enlightened me. It created curiosity. I experienced the character of the creators, Ivan Pericoli and Benoit Astier de Villatte of Astier de Villatte.
